i am just laughing to myself reading this whole thing. i will be the guy to bring a lord on a TW with a 3 man squad of thunderwolves, then bring the blood angel sanguinary priest and run him on a bike with my TW. furious charge and feel no pain. i mean come on. if thats not broken, then the liberty bell aint broken.
Why is it broken? You could buy another TWC with SS for the points of the Sang Priest. Then the Lord would not get the bonus, but it would take almost as much firepower to kill the squad with an extra TWC in there as it would with a SP (the SP is equivalent to about 3 more wounds for the TWC, while the TWC only brings in 2 more wound). With the Lord, you get a bonus of about 4 extra wounds (and none against Dreads or other units with S10 attacks, or against Force Weapons), but the Sang Priest does not do anything offensively. So you get about as much defense out of his 85 points as you would out of 2 TWCs... but practically 0 offense. It seems like a reasonable cost to get 2x the defensive bonus if you get none of the offensive bonus of adding in another TWC.
You could get a bigger bang for the points if you made the squad bigger. But as I'm sure you know, you end up with an unwieldy amount of points into a unit, especially considering that it's not Fearless and thus vulnerable to Psychic powers and to being Tank Shocked into position for blasts/templates. And if there's one thing I'm certain, is that Battle Cannons, Plasma Cannons, and Demolisher Cannons are going to be more popular in 6th than in 5th.
I can see doing what you said and calling it good. I don't see it as broken.
Other things, maybe, like adding a Sang Priest to a 50 man blob squad.
