The Battle for Salvation is an independently run NOVA-style Warhammer 40,000 Grand Tournament taking place Columbus Day weekend in 2011.

Its name comes from the Battle for Salvation gaming club responsible for organizing the event, which operates primarily out of space rented at the local Salvation Army. Comprised of a large number of players of varying interests and skill levels, the NOVA Open format was selected for this tournament because of its egalitarian approach that caters equally to all styles of hobby participation. I really hope Nova style is not going to be the new standard that tournaments will be run with. After playing in my first Nova style tournament, I really didn't like it. It is way too convoluted and confusing and the results I saw at the tourney I was at were incomprehensible. By looking at the results chart, I had no idea why the person who won the tournament actually won. I also don't like the more random style pairings. I like to have an idea of the skill level of the player I'm going to face based on how I'm playing and it's a lot harder to figure that out in a Nova style tournament. Organizers have said that Nova style tournaments are harder for people to abuse, but I don't really see that as a problem since Warhammer tournies have been run the same way for years without too many problems. The subjectiveness of the game seems so overarching that Nova doesn't really seem able to solve the problems it causes.

I can't play in the tourney because I'm doing Crossroads, but I probably wouldn't if it was at a different time because it's a Nova tournament. I am sure BFS will be a very well run tournament as I've heard good things about the organizers, but the sole fact that it's Nova makes me not want to play in it.

I seem to be in the minority based on the people I've spoken to, but this is my two cents.

ig the format is actually pretty simple.

Also keep in mind that theres alot of tournaments claiming to use the NOVA format and come very short of truly using it. Nova's basic format uses win/loss as its foundation to determine who wins rounds. However there are many other elements to running a true full blown NOVA tournament. So any tournament using the win/loss format can claim to be a Nova style tourny. The BFS GT and more recently the Grimm GT do a decent job of running a fully realized Nova Tournament by using the full setup that Mike uses at Nova. So its possible your experiance can be wanting depending on how the tournament was run. It could also simply be that you werent used to a new format.

A Nova Tournament is a format which prevents players from not playing there hardest to get weaker opponents in there next game. In many formats players can play for less points in earlier games to get weaker opponents then in the last rounds blast there opponents for max points. What the Nova system does is prevent that. You want to win big each round because if you dont you have a chance of playing harder opponents within your win loss record the next round...not easier ones. So basically the true cream starts to rise to the top.

As a note round 1 we pair up using a strength of list rubric to prevent uneven matchups round 1.

i hope this answers some of your questions

For those interested in the nitty-gritty details, the Grand Tournament Packet can be downloaded here: http://www.baldandscreaming.com/2011%20 ... Packet.pdf

Note: there will be a separate packet for the Team Tournament on Friday. Also, a painting rubric is forthcoming.

just a reminder to anyone even considering they might attend and will need a hotel to make a reservation at the hilton garden inn. Columbus day is popular in this area with weddings and fall foliage watchers so rooms wont last long. The block of rooms is limited due to this.

hotels have 24-48 hr cancellations so if you choose not to attend there is little chance of getting stuck with a room you wont be using.

Also more info coming regarding the team tournament packet and gaming schedules

Folks, we are 2 weeks away from the Tournament. We have about a dozen spots left open so if your procrastinating i suggest signing up ASAP before the last minute rush.

Hotel reservations should also be done as well.

We will be awarding 4 Spots into the NOVA Invitational Tournament
