Hey guys,

Below are pics of my work in progress display board. I need some advice on color choices and such. See pics and questions that follow. Thanks!

Theme: The board shows an assassination attempt by the Dark Elves of a newly crowned Phoenix King. All such crownings take place in a ritual ceremony at the Shrine of Asuryan, creator god of the Elves. The attack has angered the Lord of Heaven (Asuryan) and his servants have risen to aid the High Elves in slaughtering the Druchii upstarts.

Image
Front on view. The big pink circular area will be a water feature with stepping stones crossing from one side of the walkway to another. The large clumps of big stony areas around the middle of the courtyard will be completely covered in wildflowers. As a point in fact, wildflowers will be scattered across the board in general.

Close up of pyramid front. A door goes behind the Prince.
Question #1 - I need to paint the pyramid. What color should I go for?
Question #2 - I'm not fielding the Prince with wings (mounted on Eagle) but I am fielding the exact same model on foot. I think the Winged Prince is a cooler looking model. Was going to display the Winged Prince and just put the normal prince in my pocket. Thoughts?

View of the Dragon Princes - they are running down a group of dark elves ready to attack the ranked up spearmen unit defending the phoenix crown. Spearmen unit pic is below.

View of the White Lion unit, the three Great Eagles (Phoenix Swarms) and Flaming Banner Archers (in rear).

Question 1: I was going to litter the area around the Dark Elves with arrows but is that stupid looking with the White Lions standing right there (and potentially in the way of errant arrow fire)?

Image
A straight on view of the top level of the Shrine. The archers in blue will be repainted in purples. They are going to be functionaries of the temple who draw on the basic training in archery that all elves recieve (accurate as per fluff). To the right is my converted Caradryan. Purely a display piece. Behind, the lone Swordmaster model is a stand in for what will eventually be the newly crowned Phoenix King model I have selected. Behind that is the main altar. The Yellow Thing is a basecoated fire wyrm model that represents the manifestation of the anger of Asuryan at the dark elves' attack.

Question 1: Should I make the temple open top or keep the pyramid. The pyramid is quite heavy and cumbersome.

Thanks guys.

A couple thoughts.

There is no such thing as errant elven archery. That being said you have to decide whether or not the extra bodies on the board add or detract.

Keep the pyramid. It takes the design from a Ziggurat style to a true pyramid. Sucks its heavy but can you remove it to move the board around?

Color of the pyramid. I think a white marble would really make your figures pop..

Drop the Pyramid over the altar. It looks thematically out of place the way you have it. It will also detract from the action & pieces that are displayed within the altar as it will cover it in shadow. Unless your plan is to put lights in the bottom of it, you should be able to find something else to put over it than the pyramid.

Suggestion - Use the first two courses of brick of the pyramid as a base for a giant phoenix statue. It will feel more appropriate than the combo pyramid / ziggurat. with that in mind, and the likely hood that you won't be lighting it up to see everything in the altar, spaces can be left for light to filter through and better display your piece. I'll have concept sketches for you on the back of a wild wings napkin.

I personally like the extra pieces on the display board. It helps tell a story. If there's anything you're trying to do while painting/illustrating/sculpting, is to have your piece tell a story. I don't believe they take away from your display board at all. I may opt for finding a better place for the general than your pocket though.

Looks insane. You should wear a weight belt when you carry it, that fucker looks heavy.

I agree with both previous. If you keep pyramid marble would look stellar. If you drop the pyramid a second platform w. statue would also look very cool.

I agree with Dennis on the color of the pyramid. An off white or marble color would look awesome. My vote is to keep the pyramid. I think it works well.

I like the prince with wings. It's different and it's a very dynamic model. I wouldn't duplicate the model in your army since it's so unique and is a character, so I'd take out the same model on foot.
