Hi folks...

So, uh. I've never been to a FNM and I'm wondering what exactly it's all about. I mean... is it a social event, to hang out and meet people and have fun, or is it more of a serious tournament for serious players? To be honest I have not played the game in over ten years and I don't even own a single card right now. I'd really love to get back into it but I don't know anybody who plays. I'd like to meet some new friends. I figured attending a local event would be a good start.

I can see from prior posts that sometimes not enough people show up to play, and the event is cancelled... is that common? What has the turnout been like recently? If it does happen that there aren't enough players, what generally occurs after that determination is made? I mean, does everybody just turn around and go home, or do people stay to hang out and talk and maybe play casual duels?

I'm also wondering... ah, how do I phrase this delicately. Okay, screw tact. I'm a 30 yr old woman and I won't know anybody there at all. I'm a bit worried about potentially being the only lady in a roomful of teenage boys. Mind you, I have nothing against teenage boys who are friendly, mature and fun to hang out with. I've met plenty and been privileged to call some my friends. Unfortunately I've also met plenty of the variety who have apparently never interacted with a real live female in a social environment. You all know what I mean! I just don't want to find myself surrounded by 14 yr olds who talk to my chest.

I am looking forward to making some new friends, regardless of age and gender!

Heya pearl,

FNM at grim is draft, so you don't have to worry about cards. In a draft, basically the cards are provided for you. Heres a link to how it works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic:_The ... ng#Limited

If you already knew what a draft was, sorry, I wasn't trying to be facetious :P

It's a pretty relaxed crowd at Brothers Grimm, of all ages. The magic crowd is a little older than other card games, theres rarely anyone under 15 there. Most of the people would be in the 18-23 age range and most of the rest are older with some younger. I wouldn't worry about being the 'only lady' there, there's always been at least a handful of girls when I've gone. I've seen more than ten at least once as well, some of them are regulars. On friday nights theres usually between 25 and 40 people, draft has been pretty popular lately.

If you were looking to play T2 constructed (bring your deck) that happens on Monday nights and there aren't as many people then, usually between 8 and 16. I'd start with draft, great way to get some cards for later constructed play and meet people, it's a blast. Most people are pretty humurous there, and it's not a super-serious tournament atmosphere or anything like that.

Hope this helped, and hope to see ya at Grimm.

- Christian
