Hey scrubs,

Check out my new phoenix guard test model. Old one is on the left, newbie on the right. Did I manage to translate the scheme well?

As you wish. This is the back side of two of the new PG. The old one is not in the pic

I think the shading on the left one is a bit better.

D, you've got to give me some advice on what to do with the flames. They are molded onto the cloak and I hate them. I went with white because I didn't know what else to do with em. Thoughts? I want to avoid making them into actual flames.

I dig it. You have a good purple going on there. I think both are good - the one on the left goes a little brighter but the one on the left has an awesome blend - especially going down the middle of the back.

If you hate the flames, why not just file them off? If you want a color, yellow is a solid choice as the natural complementary color - the purple is kind've blue so I think an orangish yellow would be best, but then it would look a lot like real flames. Green is a good combo with purple and that wouldn't look too realistic - with that small amount of green it probably won't get the Green Goblin look.

Too bad you hate them, they'd probably look pretty good as actual fire.

My one thought for them was this...

My army has a constellation theme in it. Most of the army is done in a blue-black/pale blue combo.

What do you think about painting the flames a very dark blue-black (necron abyss) and painting a star scape into the flames. Would it look dumb? Would the blue-black and purple clash?

You the man!

I think the stars Idea is unique and a good idea. Looking forward to more. I like the long robes of the new Guard, but the old helms style. I wish they had just used the original style helm with a sculpt upgrade. Ah well not like I even play HE. XP.

I don't think it would look dumb. I am a bit concerned about color clash. I'm not familiar with necron abyss - is that the color that you have always used to do your starfields? If so, you'll just have to test it and find out - but I think if you use black mixed with a little of the necron abyss (you still want black, just with a little hint of color) going that dark may cut down on the clash problem.

If the necron abyss is not the common color, I would go with the black as I said above, but use the dark purple of the cloak to give the hint of color.

Color clash is my fear also (calling it dumb was my way of trying to sound artsy ;)

I just worry how a blue-violet cloak would look next to a blue-black starfield. Yes, Necron is my starfield color. Its essentially an extremely deep blue black that has a slight gloss to it.

I'm going to try a test run on a model and see how it comes out. I'm okay with putting alot of time into this unit. Its my favorite elf unit and want it to really look good.

test away. If you don't mind spending the time, then go for filing the flames off if you really hate them.

Well, that was a complete and total failure.

Starscape looked like a polka dot nightmare.

SO! I went with a simpler idea. I took a pure blue-violet (the highlight color of the cloak) and used that and got this...

Image

Then, I went ahead and mixed it up with some white (about 1:1 ratio) and highlighted it for this....

Placed next to the others, I think its a VAST improvement and certainly leaves me feeling satisfied. Thoughts, oh Dirty one?

I like it a lot. I only have two possible suggestions. Take your dark purple and run a thin line along the cloak following the top of the flames just to help them jump off the cloak. And, when you highlight the flame, highlight it as you did, but also highlight them following the same line as you did on the upper folds of the cloak.

Concur. No doubt about it, Jay's painting skills are improving at a stunning rate.
