Hey man,

Looking for some quick advice. What colors should I be working with to create a shadowy flesh tone that should hint at an otherworldly origin. The concept is to do warriors from the plane of shadows. Am I looking to go blue-grey? Purple-grey?

Thanks!

I would use a purple grey. Should probably mix 3 colors for it. Grey, purple, and flesh. Then add elf flesh for in stages for highlighting (make sure you save a midtone for the wash later.

I haven't tried it, but it is conceivable that you might be able to cheat by just doing your normal skin tone colors then mix your grey/purple and wash the flesh with it. Would probably need several coats to make it right. Might be easier and faster than mixing a lot but you'd have to experiment on an old fig to see how it looks.

Good luck.

When you want my advice on something, you should probably PM me. I'd know about it quicker since I check my email for alerts more often than the forum.

Edit: Out of curiosity, what models would this be for?

Thanks for the reply,

I'm going to be leaning heavily on the Everblight range from Hordes with a mix of anima tactics minis for characters and other interesting figures I come across here and there.

I tried the purple-grey and wasn't thrilled. I made another attempt with a blue-grey and want to get your opinion. Please see below.

The first pic shows the color of the skin much better but neither does a very good job of showing it. It looks much better in person ( and certainly far less grainy)

The skin is obviously all I've really done, the rest is very WIP. How do you think it came out? I went with an Astronomicon Grey base, mixed Astronomicon Grey, Modrian Blue and Dheneb stone in 1:1:1 and worked into a wash which went on second. I then followed up with successive layers of Space Wolves Grey and Dheneb Stone 1:1 at about milk consistency and layered many thin layers on to the flesh to bring out the highlights. I don't know how well it came out but I think it looks good.

Suggestions for the kilt? I was thinking yellow but wonder if that might not really go with the 'shadow' theme I was working for. Currently its based oxford blue (vallejo) followed by successive layers of hormagaunt purple going towards the edges. Its very dark but I wonder if its not a little boring.

Thanks for the advice dude, I owe you a six pack.

I think I love it. Great job. I'd probably pass on the yellow also. I like the purple kilt also. Perhaps a line of dark red around the bottom of it - or a couple if you got the stones for it :) If you do something like that, I'd recommend -on this model at least - that if you put a hot color line at the bottom of the kilt that you also do the same color on the cloth around his elbows (remember the triangle).

Can't wait to see it IRL.

I drink Molson XXX. :)

The finished product (until I decide to change it, of course). I might add those reds you mentioned. Not sure how thrilled I am with the wrappings being sort of standard leather but I tried to keep the triangle with the arm wraps and the belt.

The pic doesn't show off the weapons well. They go from boltgun to chainmail to a slightly watered down and layered chainmail/vallejo old gold mix. The right hand sword shows it a bit better but neither comes off well in the lighting. The left hand sword has far more dark/light contrast than the pic shows.

Originally, I wanted to make the swords look like shards of glass but have no idea how to pull that off.
